Keeping a Chain Spotted For A Longer Time Living
Chain saws can be quite an investment and an important tool when cutting out trees and preparing firewood. It is important that this piece of equipment is in good working condition when using. By not repairing problems or maintaining these tools it could lead to very costly repairs, replacements or even severe injuries. It is important to make sure that any replacement parts are for the specified piece of equipment are those suggested by the manufacturer.
Step 1. Adjusting the mixture and idle speed of the chain saw can help to make it run more efficiently. To do this, first make sure that it is turned off. Remove the air cartridge and air filter to get to the idle mixture screw. Turn the idle mixture screws 1 1/2 turns counterclockwise. Locate the main jet adjustment screw with the use of the owner’s manual that is specific for the model. Turn the main jet adjustment screw until it is touching the seat of the emulsion tube using a clockwise motion. Turn it 1 1/2 turns using a counterclockwise motion. Place the air filter back where it belongs.
Caliper Measuring Tool
Step 2. With a tachometer, gauge the engine speed of the chain saw. If it is an aluminum cylinder engine model it should run at 1750 RPMs. Cast iron cylinder engine models should have a reading of 1200 RPMs. If there is any other tachometer reading than what is suggested for the engine model there is a need to set the idle speed screw to repair this problem.
Step 3. Inspect the choke plate for the chain saw if there is trouble starting. This will be located at the opening of the carburetor’s throat area. Starting this piece of equipment can be affected if the choke plate will not close properly or if it is moving freely. To adjust this, dirt and debris must be removed by using a carburetor cleaner and spraying the cleaner into the shaft of the choke and into the venturi.
Step 4. If there are problems with the actual running of the chain saw, this may be a warning that the spark plugs need to be inspected. A wet spark plug can be a sign that there is water in the fuel. To repair this the fuel tank may need to be serviced. If the spark plug is excessively dry this can mean that the fuel filter is clogged and needs to be cleaned or replaced. Using a micrometer caliper the gap in the spark plug must be measured. The right reading should indicate that the spark plug is gapped at.025 of an inch.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers all give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used for measuring size differential between two objects, as well. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.

Brown & Sharpe 599-579-4 DIAL-CAL Dial Caliper, White Face, 0-6″ Range, +/-0.001″ Accuracy, 0.001″ Graduation, Without Thumbwheel Description
The Swiss-made Brown & Sharpe 599-579-4 dial caliper measures 0 to 6 inches with 0.001” accuracy. Linear accuracy meets the internationally used Deutsches Institut fuer Normung (DIN) 862: Vernier Calipers Requirements and Testing standards. This handy measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate readings with the sharp, black graduations on the no-glare, satin-finished bar, crisp lines on the white dial face, and knife edge contacts for inside and outside measurements. Makes inside, outside, depth, and step measurements.
One full revolution of the dial is equivalent to 0.100”. The jaw depths on this caliper are 1.5” for the outside measuring jaws and 0.512″ on the inside measuring jaws. The knife-edge contacts can be used to scribe parallel lines on the workpiece. This caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. The lock screw locks the dial and holds the sliding jaw in position. Adjustable zero set allows the user to set zero at a convenient distance. The depth rod is integrated into the rack of the caliper, unlike many calipers which offer a detachable depth rod, or none at all. The hardened stainless steel components, including the bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Spring anti-backlash control offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls, which prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; spring anti-backlash systems use a spring to add a compressive force, thereby minimizing backlash.

Mitutoyo 505-675-52 Dial Caliper, 0.1″ Per Rev., Purple Face, 0-6″ Range, +/-0.001″ Accuracy, 0.001″ Graduation Description
The Mitutoyo 505-675-52 dial caliper uses a dial to perform precise measurements to within 0.001″ mm, necessary for applications requiring the highest accuracy, such as in scientific research and in industries where parts must fit exactly. It has a dial with a purple face and measures in inches. One revolution of the dial indicator needle equals one-tenth inch on the main scale.
The dial uses a rack-and-pinion mechanism and is mounted on a gear track where each tooth equals 0.025″ or one quarter of the dial resolution, and four teeth equal 0.100.” The main scale is graduated in 0.100″ increments, and the dial is graduated from 0.001″ up to one-hundred-thousandths of an inch. The dial has smooth movement and gear train shock protection. A thumbwheel permits fast and easy measuring. A clamping screw controls scale movement and a dial calibration lock holds the sliding jaw’s position. The caliper weighs 175 g and is made of hardened stainless steel construction with titanium nitride (TiN) coating on the beam wear surface to help extend caliper life. With its fixed and movable jaws, it has four-way measurement capability: outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), depth, and step, where the butt end of the fixed jaw measures one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer “steps” are measured. It has a main slide length of 231 mm, a lower jaw depth of 40 mm, an upper jaw length of 21 mm, an upper jaw depth of 16.5 mm, and a beam width of 16.0 mm. Jaws are lapped to increase accuracy. Range is 0” to 6″, range per revolution is 0.100″, resolution is 0.001″, and accuracy is rated at + or – 0.001″, which meets Federal Accuracy Specifications GGG-C-111B.

The Mitutoyo 500-196-20 ABSOLUTE 500 series digital caliper is one of Mitutoyo’s original MyCal Ez Digimatic digital calipers. It gives an absolute reading from zero rather than the last at-rest position. It is made of durable hardened stainless steel to shield its components and for use anywhere in the workshop. It uses Mitutoyo’s ABSOLUTE linear encoder technology, which allows you to “set and forget” the origin and measure in awkward or difficult locations.
This digital caliper has .295-inch/7.5-mm LCD characters and easy-to-reach function control buttons, such as Inch/Metric to convert measurements, Origin to set and retain the original measuring point, On/Off to automatically shut off the caliper after 30 minutes, and Zero/ABS (Absolute Scale) to zero-set the LCD display.
Although identical to dial and vernier calipers in its ability to make precise measurements, the digital caliper also has the LCD, which clearly shows values and increases reading reliability over the other types. The 500-196-20’s LCD also reflects all ABSOLUTE system activities. The Absolute Scale (ABS) function tracks the origin point you set—even after shutoff. With the caliper on again, you can immediately start measuring, without zero resetting or worrying about overspeed errors. You can “zero out” the LCD before making and comparing incremental measurements without having to subtract the first measurement from the second.
The 500-196-20 has the ABSOLUTE electrostatic capacitance linear encoder. It weighs approximately 1 lb (453 g) and has four-way measurement capability: outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), depth, and step, where the butt end of the fixed jaw measures one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer “steps” are measured. Jaw depth is 1.60”, Range is 0 to 6″/150 mm, LCD Resolution is .0005″/.01 mm, Repeatability is .0005″/.01 mm, and Accuracy is rated + or – .001″/.02 mm. Also included are origin-setting, zero-setting, inch-to-metric conversion, and on/off automatic shutoff function buttons. A Digital LCD Data Reading Hold function is available with the optional Data Hold Unit (959143), sold separately. An alarm alerts the user to low voltage and scale contamination and counting value composition errors. A rolling thumb wheel makes fine adjustments and a thumb screw locks the scale’s position. Response speed is unlimited. The caliper has no SPC (Statistical Process Control) output; it draws 1/4 the battery power when switched on and about 1/8 the battery power when switched off compared to other digital calipers. The SR44 silver oxide cell battery (938882) lasts for approximately 20,000 hours (3.5 years) of continual normal use and is recommended to maintain constant voltage levels.
A digital caliper is a measuring instrument commonly used for inspection in manufacturing. It has two pairs of jaws on one end attached to a long beam with a marked scale. It takes and displays measurements in both English and Metric units with high-resolution and gearless precision. It comes from the basic caliper, a device used to measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. The digital caliper allows for the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide. However, its LCD has replaced the analog dial of the dial caliper with an electronic digital display of the measurement reading as an easily read single value. A digital caliper is commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, carpentry, and medicine.
Founded in Tokyo in 1934, Mitutoyo is a leader in the metrology field, producing high-quality measurement products, including mechanical, dimensional gauging products, focusing on micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other measurement tools, as well as output gauges, interfaces, data collectors, and analysis software. Mitutoyo formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, Illinois, with additional locations in the U.S. and Canada.
